Climbing a ball or stairs easily after a leg dissection above the knee is now within access. Researchers at MIT have developed a bionic knee that defines mobility for up-to-de-stroke employees. Unlike traditional socket-based prosthetics, this system anchors directly to bone and integrates with surrounding muscle tissue. The result is sharp, smooth and more natural movement.
Under the leadership of Professor Huga Herr, the MIT team created a solution that does not just mimic the speed, it responds to the intention. This level of control allows prosthesis to move to the sink with the body, providing an easy experience that challenges the very definition of prostheses.

How E-opra bionic works amputees for knee
The technique is called the e-OPRA (oscillate prosthesis enhanced for rehabilitation of the emputes). This involves sequentially transplanting a titanium rod in the femur, which directly connects to a robot prosthetic organ. It becomes the foundation of a new type of interface between the rod body and the machine. But it does not stop there.
The muscles are re-added to the functional pairs, using a special surgical technique known as the agonist-angonist meonular interface (AMI). These muscles “talk” to each other, send a signal to the robot controller, which really calculates how to move the knee, shows how a real leg works.

In trials, two patients with this integrated system not only performed better, but they also felt better. They went fast, climbed the stairs more easily, and avoid obstacles with more confidence. Most importantly, he felt as prosthetic was part of his body.

While the results are groundbreaking, the E-OPRA system is not yet on the market. Large clinical testing and FDA approval are still ahead. Herr estimates that within five years, this technique can be more accessible to patients.
