New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday said that it has issued a central assistance of only Rs 7 crore to West Bengal for the modernization of police in the last five years, against the total allocation of Rs 117 crore under the head. This, it said, was due to the non-educational amount and non-proportion of the useful certificate by the state government.In response to a question by BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, Mos (Ghar) Nityanand Rai said that the Bengal government had created an unexpected balance of Rs 12.5 crore from the funds issued under the assistance of UTS for states and UTS for modernization of states and police. In addition, the state had to submit an use certificate yet.Sharing data on the allocation and release of funds to Bengal, Rai said no funds were issued in 2021-22, 2023-24 and 2025-26 (till now), despite allocation ranging from Rs 12.2 crore to Rs 28.9 crore. In 2024-25, Rs 6.5 crore was released in Rs 6.5 crore and Rs 54 lakh in 2022-23, later it was approved as a special grant under the Ministry of Home Affairs Contingency Reserve.
