In December 2025, the long -awaited Zayed National Museum will open its doors on Sadiyat Island. It is not just another museum, it is a major part of the city’s comprehensive plan to attract 39 million visitors a year by 2030. With other cultural institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Gugneim, the Zayed National Museum helps in the form of a serious destination for global culture.But this museum also does something else. It looks inward. It shows the story of the United Arab Emirates through the life of its founder President, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With collections that retreat for thousands of years and architecture designed for the future, its purpose is to add the past, present and future under one roof.
What about the museum
The museum is named Sheikh Zayed (1918-2004), the first president of the UAE and the name of a person who shaped the identity of the country. His story is central for the concept of the museum. But it does not stop there. The galleries also discovered the long history of the region, from the early settlements to the formation of the modern state in 1971.Designed by the UK -based Foster + Partners, the museum reflects the values of Sheikh Zayed and the widespread history of the UAE. It acts as a tribute to the founding father and a reflection on the leadership, heritage and development of the country.
Architecture: made for this place
The building is standing outside. Five large steel structures arise from a man -made mound, which are of the shape of Falcon wings, which is an important symbol in the Emirati culture. These tower are not only decorative. They act as thermal chimney, which naturally help cool space in the heat of Abu Dhabi.The design combines traditional Arabic elements with sustainable construction practices. Inside, the galleries are embedded within the landscape, combination in the topography of the Emirates. It is a mixture of old and new, forms and functions in balance.

The museum will have six permanent galleries at two levels. These will facilitate artifacts from peliolithic to iron era, as well as recent periods. Some highlights include:
- Abu Dhabi Pearl: An 8,000 -year -old natural Pearl was found on the island of Marwa.
- Blue Quran: A rare manuscript from around 800–900 AD.
- A full -size merry boat: An ancient vessel placed at the entrance of the museum.
