Britain has to face “growing” and unexpected threats from Iran and the government should do more to combat it, the Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee has warned.
This call comes as it publishes the results of a major investigation, in which the Iranian state murder and kidnapping, espionage, cyber attacks and nuclear programs of the country were investigated.
The committee that oversees Britain’s detective agencies, which has created special concern in the plots against the opponents of the Iranian rule in the UK.
“Iran pose a wider, consistent and unexpected threat to the UK, UK citizens and the interests of Britain,” said Lord Beamish, the committee chairman.
“Iran has a high appetite for risk when conducting aggressive activity and its intelligence services are well revived with important areas of asymmetric power.”
He said: “Iran is in the full spectrum of all kinds of dangers that we have to be worried.”
The committee accused the government of focusing on “crisis management” and “fire-fighting” with Iran, as well as its nuclear program at the cost of other dangers.
It states that national security threat from Iran requires more restoration and a long -term approach.
“While Iran’s activity appears to be less strategic and smaller than Russia and China, Iran is a widespread threat to Britain’s national security, which should not be underestimated: it is continuously and maturatically.”
The report was published on Thursday as part of the investigation of the Committee on National Security Issues related to Iran. This covers incidents till August 2023, when the committee ended taking evidence.
It is previously read by Prime Minister Sir Keir Stmper, which was sent a copy in March, and was broadcast among the UK intelligence organizations to investigate accuracy and request them to request a redeeration on national security basis.
According to the committee, the government needs to provide its response within 60 days of publication.
The committee examines the policies, expenditure, administration and operation of UK intelligence organizations including Mi5, Mi6 and GCHQ.
