Opra Winfrey chose “convict” by Bruce Holsinger as its latest book club selection. Winfrey said that the novel investigates artificial intelligence and moral responsibility, many subjects are currently struggling.
“I chose it because it is very present. It is presentant. It is now. And it is also a future.” “If you were looking to read in summer, it is,” he said.
The time of their selection was particularly relevant after the Winfrey attended a program, including performance of self-driving cars.
“I had just gone to one of those technical conferences, and I saw a performance of the Vaymo-carless cars, self-driving cars,” he said.
The novel examines the topics of accountability at the age of AI through a family story, whose self-driving Minivan crashes in an upcoming car, killing an elderly couple.
Winfrey described central characters as “a specific great American family”.

Writer Bruce Holnser said that he wrote a book to find out how Artificial Intelligence affects people’s moral responsibility and a sense of autonomy in daily life.
Halsinger recalled the moment when he received a call from Winfrey about the book.
“I pick up the phone, and, Um, I hear this voice, and say, ‘Bruce.” And I said, ‘Yes.’ And she says, ‘This is Opra.’ And I first, I thought it was AI-Janit. ,
He said that he deliberately used small chapters to keep the story suspicious.
Winfrey agreed that the structure works well: “Because you are feeling so proficient. Another chapter.”
He also warned the readers not to leave further.
Vinfrey said, “Do not cut till the end under any circumstances. Because the end is going to give you a shock, it doesn’t matter.”
