The 2–0 scorline gives importance to the US, especially Mexico’s historical dominance has moved towards more competitive rivalry since the turn of the century.
So what Dos a seroAnd why is it brought? Let’s dive.
USA-Mexico rivalry brief snapshot
First, the overall USA-Mexico men’s football rivalry that goes back to 1934-it did not start even in any country.
The first game between the two neighbors was a 4–2 victory for the US in the World Cup qualifying match, with a game held in Rome before the 1934 tournament in Italy. But Mexico will dominate the rest of the century, USMNT did not win again until 1980.
Overall, there have been 78 matches between the two teams, Mexico has taken advantage of 37 wins. There are 24 wins in the US, and 17 draws. Mexico lost on the soil of the house only once, friendly to 2012.

But when it comes to the game with something on the line – whether it is in the World Cup qualifying matches, the gold cup clash, or even in the World Cup itself – it is the USA with the upper hand.
The USA has 16 wins in competitive matches, with Mexico 14, and nine draws.

And as we expand below, both teams met in the real World Cup only in 2002, when the US defeated Mexico to proceed in the quarter -finals – by a score of 2–0. Sports held in South Korea, third and last time rivalry was played outside North America.
As the 1994 World Cup and the establishment of Major League Soccer in 1996, the game increased interest, which helped transfer the tide to the USA-Maxico rivalry. Since 2000, the USMNT has 20 wins compared to Mexico’s 19 (with four draws).
A ‘Cold War’ solves a notorious scorline
On October 5, 2000, a friendly match between the two teams in the Los Angeles Memorial Colizium marked a turn in rivalry. It launched the USMNT legend Landon Donovan, who scored the winner in a 2–0 win, which would indicate and point out things.

Five months later, both teams met under very different circumstances. Instead of an exhibition match in the season of Breezi California, it was a World Cup qualifying match on 28 February 2001 in cold temperatures at Ohio. In a game known La Guer Friya (“The Cold War”), Josh Wolf and Arni Stewart’s goal strengthened the result of each other directly on Mexico.
Then came that this rivalry and the signature moments of this scoreline remain. Both teams met again on the world’s biggest platform on 17 June 2002 – the World Cup. In a elimination match to the right to reach the quarter -finals. Donovan’s second half goal in Geonju, South Korea, third was straightforward ‘Dos a sero,
The next three times when the US hosted Mexico in the World Cup qualifying matches (2005, 2009, 2013), all followed the same pattern. Played in Columbus. And all ended 2–0. Even there were some speculation that Clint Dempsy deliberately missed a penalty kick to maintain the scorline in the 2013 victory.
“Naah, I always try to score … I was a little tired,” Dempsy told reporters after that game, citing that this was her first penalty miss for USMNT.
“It’s this mysterious thing, okay? It’s like this ghost,” US midfielder Alejandro Bedoya also said about the scoring scoring.
Add two wins in exhibition matches with the same scorline in 2007 and 2015 and El tri Fans started thinking that there was one Dos a sero curse.

The curse is broken – and ‘DOS A Sero’ 2.0
The fans of the USMNT will always connect the 2018 World Cup qualifying cycle with damage to Trinidad and Tobago, which stopped the team from going to Russia. But there were indications with that campaign that America would enter a lower point.
First warning sign? Mexico finally broke the curse of the World Cup qualifying Games held in Columbus. On November 11, 2016, the Rafael Market’s target won 2–1 for Mexico in the vanning minutes of the game.
Marx said after that game, “This was a new opportunity for me, we all to write a new story, and we did so.” “It was a long time without winning cold, difficulties and rival, without winning here.”

The US failed to respond in its next game, with Costa Rica lost 4–0, causing Jargan Clinsman to work as a manager. But the US would struggle through the rest of the qualifying, and eventually decreased to reach Russia.
But Dos a sero Did not stay away for a long time. It just returned with a minor turn. USMNT defeated Mexico once again in a World Cup qualifying match on 21 November, 2021 in Ohio-but this time in Cincinnati instead of Columbus. This included responding to the commentary made by Christian police scoring and El tri Keeper Guillermo Ochoa said that “Mexico is the mirror in which [U.S.] Wants to see himself.

The US then again did on 24 March 2024 with a real trophy on the line. Tyler Adams and Gio Reyana secured their spots Dos a sero Arlington, to win ConcacAF Rashtra League Trophy at Mexico at the AT & T Stadium in Texas.
And then another turn, Mexico finally secured its own Dos a seroIn the second match of Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT in charge, he found a quick introduction of rivalry in 2–0 defeat on October 15, 2024, which was friendly in Guedaljara.

We want to finish summer with both USMNT and Mexico on a high note and with a trophy, we should expect a recreational game in the Sunday Gold Cup final in Houston. It remains to be seen whether we will see that familiar scorline flash in the stadium.
