Stars from the United States and Mexico will not have to worry about remembering the first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they take the ConcacAF Gold Cup to the ground on Sunday (4 pm on Fox).
This is because any possible suspension will be served with a red card or several yellow card before next year’s World Cup.
In a recent change by Concacaf, three 2026 World Cup cum-Majesty-Canada, Mexico and the United States players can serve that suspension in the next internationally favorable match of the team.
The next competition for those three countries is technically 2026 World Cups, but due to the exception mentioned by FIFA for host nations, they are not affected by potential suspension based on card accumulation.
It is particularly relevant to Canada, with Jacob Shaffelberg for his next match after lifting two Yellow in the Gold Cup quarterfinal against Guatemala. Sheffelberg may have missed Canada’s next competitive match (their 2026 World Cup opener), but can serve suspension instead when the team travels to Romania for a sept 5 friendly match.
It also makes a difference for Mexico and the United States, with nine combined yellow cards that are going to the Sunday final (four from the US, five from Mexico). An additional yellow card or a red card will be the result of a suspension for their friendship in September for any of any pre -made players.
The change comes as a result of Article 69.3 of the Disciplinary Code of FIFA, stating that “If a representative team is hosting the final competition and as a result, there is no need to participate in the qualifying matches to reach the final competition of this tournament and its next official match is in that final competition, then any match will be taken to the next friend of the representative team.”
This is different from the disciplinary code of Concacaf, stating that at the end of the competition, any unexpected suspension will be taken to the “player or the next official match of the national team of the team or the team of the team.
