BBC News, Dharmashala
The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has confirmed that he will have a successor, to rest on whether the 600 -year -old institute will die.
Appropriately awaited by his followers in a video message, he said that only the trust he established can appoint his successor and “someone else has no right to interfere in the matter”.
According to the Tibetan tradition, the Dalai Lamas is “reborn” after death. The exile of the present Dalai Lama from Tibet made succession a highly controversial issue after China canceled it in the 1950s.
Beijing dismissed the statement that its successor would be from inside China and it should be approved by the government.
Hundreds of followers gathered on Wednesday to hear the long -awaited announcement in the Indian city of Dharmashala, where the Dalai Lama lives.
The Dalai Lama Library and Archive Center, where the video messages were broadcast, in appearance used to resemble a sea of maroon with monks around the world.
“I am confirming that the organization of the Dalai Lama will continue,” Dalai Lama’s statement said,
He reiterated that “the Gaden Fodrang Trust, the Office of the Holyness Dalai Lama … should complete the processes of discovery and recognition according to the previous tradition”.
Dharmashala Dalai Lama’s milestone is organizing the 90th birthday celebrations, which began on Monday – her birthday – and her official birthday will conclude on 6 July according to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar.
The ceremony will be attended by over 7,000 guests, including several Indian ministers. Hollywood actor Richard Gere, a long -time followers, are also participating.
In the past, the Nobel Peace Prize winners of Tibetan Buddhism were exploded between the post of spiritual head Dalai Lama or not. A few years ago, he said that his successor could be a girl, or that there could be no successor.
But in recent years, he also said that if the post would have widespread support among the Tibetans – which is there – then it will continue and his office would choose a successor.
He has always stressed that his successor should be born outside China and did not go down well with Beijing on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the rebirth of the Dalai Lama should follow the “religious rituals and historical conferences” along with Chinese laws and rules and would need to be approved by Beijing.
Even though the Dalai Lama has always advocated a “middle path” to solve the position of Tibet – real self -governance within China – Beijing considers it as a separatist. It says that the standard of living people’s living in Tibet has greatly improved under its rule and refuses to suppress their human rights and freedom of expression.
The Dalai Lama’s message “confirming that the continuation of the institution” has been welcomed by his followers.
40 -year -old businessman Tsyang Gateo said that for most Tibetans, the announcement is “a moment of great relief and happiness”.
“I always believed that rebirth would come. But he heard it with purity, I feel that I feel,” he told the BBC in Dharamshala.
Mr. Gyato, who traveled from Delhi, said he felt that “blessed here to see the birthday of purity”.
He said that “there was a lot of publicity from China on the appointment of the next Dalai Lama”, which feared that the process of appointment could be corrupted “but all that is placed to relax for the declaration of purity”.
Robert Barnet, a Tibet scholar from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, told the BBC that the Dalai Lama’s “message is an indirect sign” to China.
“He is indicating two things here. One he is going to decide on his rebirth, not China. And the second he is showing China that he has done this decision through a kind of popular – almost democratic – community asking the process of asking the process to continue his institution.”
This is an indication for China that their validity is based on consent and not on force, Prof. Barnet said.
However, experts say that China also expects to name its Dalai Lama.
Dibesh Anand, a professor of international relations at Westminster University, said, “After a few months or a few years period, they will have their own protigs who will identify a little boy, because as the next Dalai Lama and to tell that most people are going to reject it.
Youdon Aukatsang, an MP in the Tibetan Parliament, exiled, told BBC that “Beijing has completely failed” despite all these years of trying to control the hearts and minds of the Tibetan people inside Tibet “.
A Dalai Lama chosen by China, she says, “Not only the Tibetans, but the world will not be recognized, but the world will not accept it because China does not have legitimacy to find the future Dalai Lama of the future”.
“We are worried, but we know that despite our concern, China will come with its own Dalai Lama, we will call it Chinese-beloved Dalai Lama. I am not worried that the Dalai Lama will have any credibility in the Tibetan world or Buddhist world.”
