“This is a setback and it is unacceptable,” that the United Nations’ Human Rights Office spokesman Themen al-Khitan said on Tuesday.
“This raises many questions about the targeting of many, journalists and all these incidents should be thoroughly investigated and those responsible should be held accountable.”
Talking about Israel’s investigation into deaths in Gaza, he said: “These investigations need to get the results. There is a need to do justice. We have not yet seen the results or accountability measures.”
In its statement, the IDF stated that it identified a camera posted by Hamas in the hospital area, using “to inspect the activity of IDF soldiers”, without providing evidence.
“The soldiers operated to remove the danger by striking and destroying the camera,” the statement said. It alleged that six of those killed were “terrorists”. A military spokesperson later said that journalists working for Reuters and Associated Press were not a goal.
The IDF report appears to be a change in tone from Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statement on Monday evening, which depicted the incident as a “tragic accident”.
However, the IDF did not explain why a second attack was launched after the first. Instead it was said that further investigation was required in the authority process, including ammunition used and the “decision making process in the area” of the military.
Israel has repeatedly targeted hospitals in Gaza throughout the war, despite the security in international law, saying that medical facilities are being used by Hamas.
