Donald Trump said 600,000 Chinese students would be allowed to study in colleges in the US amidst ongoing trade talks with China.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, the President’s declaration indicates a possible melting in the US-China relations after increasing tariffs and restrictions on Chinese students.
Trump told reporters, “I hear so many stories that we are not going to allow their students.”
He said, “We are going to allow their students to come. It is very important, 600,000 students. It is very important. But we will meet with China.”

Trump’s student visa offers come against the background of business talks with the Chinese government.
Earlier this year, the administration imposed a 145% tariff on all Chinese goods, inspiring Beijing to retaliate with 125% tariff on US exports.
In Geneva, the negotiaters agreed to stop the additional levy in May, but Trump continued to warn of further punishment.
Last week, he floated 200% tariffs on Chinese-made magnets, stating that he described as a “monopoly” of Beijing in the global market.

“I don’t think we are going to have a problem with it,” Trump told reporters.
“China, wisely, went away and took a monopoly on the world’s magnets. It would probably take us a year to have them,” he said.
Currently, about 270,000 Chinese students are enrolled in American universities.
In May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio Announced a plan to “cancel the visa” for Chinese citizens, especially the Communist Party or sensitive research fields.
Trump has shifted the tone in June, stating reporters that he has “always in favor” to welcome Chinese students.

Trump’s comment on admitting Chinese students was ahead of a meeting with South Korean President Lee J. Mayung.
When he was asked about a possible summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he looked positive. He said that he would like to meet him this year.

“As you know, we are, we are taking a lot of money from China due to tariffs and different things. This is a very important relationship,” said Trump. “It is an economically much better relationship with the dialect than before. But they allowed it. They just took him to the cleaner.”
