The 58th Leeds is celebrating black culture in the West Indian Carnival city.
The Carnival has been held in Chapletown since 1967, which was launched by Arthur France, who arrived in the city with a group of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“It is so important that we celebrate our black culture in Britain,” he said during the ceremony on Bank Holiday on Monday.
“We are going for love in every way.
“We have already won because we are here.”
Kathy Williams, director of RJC Dance, who is involved in the carnival, stated that in 2025 the company’s theme was about “Roots and All Connecting”.
“This rainforest is about stability, being environmentally friendly,” he said.
“These are generations that will take the carnival to the next millennium and save the planet.”
Ms. Williams said that the carnival was about “liberation, community, culture, history and stability”.
RJC dance costume designer Ryan Campdu-Millar stated that there was a “permanent trilogy” of outfits for 2023, 2024 and 2025.
