New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday handled opposition parties to oppose the Constitutional Amendment Bill, which wants to provide PM, CMS and ministers to remove, if they spend 30 days behind bars or in custody, they say they are going to run from jail.Shah said that opposition parties say that if their politicians ever have to go to jail, they can run the government from behind bars. Shah said in an interview with news agency Annie, “The jail will be made CM House, PM House … DGP, Chief Secretary, Cabinet Secretary or Home Secretary, will take orders from jail.”He criticized Rahul Gandhi of Congress on the issue, reminding him of his action to tear the 2013 ordinance and said that the Manmohan Singh government brought Lalu Prasad to save him from being convicted of the RJD executive in a criminal case.“Why did Rahul ji tore the ordinance that Manmohan Singh had brought to protect Lalu ji? If there was morality that day, what happened now? Just because you have lost three consecutive elections?Shah expressed confidence that the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, despite the opposition’s fierce criticism, would be passed. “I am sure it will be passed. There will be many people in the Congress and in opposition who will support morality and maintain moral grounds,” he said. The bill proposes to automatically remove PM, CMS and ministers, if they are arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days, the sentence of five years or more imprisonment is accused. The bill is referred to for a detailed investigation of a JPC, consisting of 31 members from both houses of Parliament. This will examine the bill and provide recommendations before voting.Emphasizing the bill that the PM covers that the PM would be equally applicable to all the parties, Shah said that the NDA CMS is more and the PM is also from the same alliance, therefore, the bill will not affect the opposition alone. “Now, PM Narendra Modi is there, so there is no question. But if the PM of the country goes to jail, do you think it is true that PM or a CM runs the government from jail? Shah asked.Citing cases of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia not resigning from their posts, Shah said, “This is a new tradition. Two years ago, there was no such case. The leader will generally resign after being accused and then will enter politics after being released. Some ministers of Tamil Nadu will not resign. We disagree with them to reduce political or social morality to such a level.“He also cited the example of the resignation of Jharkhand CM Hemen Soren before his arrest. On the boycott of JPC of TMC and AAP, Shah said that the government has given him a proper opportunity to participate. “This is not right to reject the rules of Parliament and then everything is expected to happen on your terms. The government is giving them a chance, but if they do not accept it, there is nothing we can. If they refuse to join JPC, what can we do? He said.Shah also confirmed that, unlike the allegations of protest, the presence of CISF is not an attempt to reduce or suppress legitimate opposition within Parliament. “Inside the Parliament, any force present there is subject to the rights of the speaker. Earlier, it used to be a Delhi Police personnel; now it is CISF,” he said and recalled the canister attack, after which CISF was deployed.
