A fire fighter described a Murland Blaze as the eldest in his 31 -year career, as he praised his “tireless” colleagues for bringing it under control.
On Monday 11 August, a major incident was declared when a fire broke out on Langdel Moore near the ballistic missile Early Warning Base at RAF Failingdale, as it reached about 1.9 to 3SQ miles (5 to 8SQ km).
The crew is expected to stay on the site for several more weeks and is put into the firebrex to almost control the blaze to prevent it from spreading further.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Group Manager Andy Kreesi said that workers are now trying to deal with an invisible fire burning under the ground.
He said: “I have worked for this fire service for 31 years and at that time, this is the largest Murland fire I have ever participated in my career.
“We have an issue when the fire is burning in peat soil, such as when it is on the surface it can jump and go to Heather and Murland at the top of the road.
“But we have found below the tracks that we have received, it can actually burn under the tracks and also come out on the other side, so our firebrex is put to deliberately trying to try and stop it.”
The area where the fire spread was used as a firing range decades ago and hence the burial emissions have now exploded.
Firefighting parties are working with the Ministry of Defense to ensure that the equipment is safely exploded.
Mr. Kreesi said that nonstops have been working for about two weeks to bring the crew under control.
He said, “Those who are here are here to do their work, they understand the nature of the work they are doing and they are tirelessly trying to stop spreading any further from this fire,” he said.
