A lorry dropped its cargo of paint across the M42 motorway when he was involved in an accident.
The collision between Solyhul and Shirley took place at around 14:00 BST on the south side, the National Highway (NH) confirmed.
Spilage initially saw three out of four lanes closed with drivers facing a delay of more than an hour. It is not currently clear whether any other vehicles were involved or not.
A NH spokesperson confirmed at 19:30 that two lanes remained closed, as the cleaning continued, with a delay of about 20 minutes.
