Postal services worldwide are stopping some delivery to the US during confusion around new import taxes, which should be paid on the parcel from the end of the month.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month Abolition of global import tax exemption On low-value parcel, which is effective from August 29.
While gifts of less than $ 100 will remain duty-free, changes means that all other packages will have to face tariff rates similar to other goods from their native country.
Postal services, including Royal Mail and DHL of Germany, said they would suspend delivery until they had proper systems to deal with the new rules.
Royal Mail said it was withdrawing its current US export services for businesses from Tuesday, but said that it is expected that a new system is going on within two days, so that they could allow them to follow the new rules before kicking.
The company said, “We are working hard with American officials and international partners to customize our services to meet the new US day minimis requirements so that the UK consumers and businesses can continue to use our services.”
Royal Mail said that cards and letters can be posted as usual.
The US had a so -called de minimis exemption on packages up to $ 800, which allowed consumers to buy cheap clothes and household items from sites such as Shin and Temu without paying import duties.
But the duty-free rule on Chinese goods ending on May 2 has ended, and now it is being extended to the rest of the word.
The White House said that ending the duty-free exemption would compete with “to increase misleading shipping practices, illegal materials and duty circumference”, some shippers claimed that the discount was “misbehaved” to send illegal drugs in the US.
The Trump administration said that the de minimis shipment had touched 115 million in the 2023/24 financial year, which had increased to 309 million by June 30 this year.
While China is a major source of shipment that uses discounts, Canada and Mexico are also important sources of low -cost parcels sent to the US.
DUSH Post and DHL Parcel Germany said it was temporarily suspending parcel delivery for trade customers for the US from Saturday, as “major questions remain unresolved” as to how duties would be paid, and by whom.
DHL depressed this “closely monitoring further developments” and remained in touch with US authorities, and said that its shipping is “possible” through DHL Express services.
“The company aims to resume postal goods shipping as soon as possible to the US,” said this.
Earlier this week, Postnord announced that it was also suspending services as US authorities had provided details about the necessary changes only on August 15.
“This decision is unfortunate, but required to ensure complete compliance with the newly implemented rules,” said the Byorn Bergman, the head of the postnord’s group brand and the head of communication.
Online Marketplace ETSY said it was suspending the shipping label purchase from August 25 for Australia Post, Canada Post, Royal Mail and EVRI, while courier adjusted services.
“Tariff conditions are developing, so please be sure to monitor the recommendations from your favorite shipping carrier,” AT said in advice to its vendors.
In Trump’s “big beautiful bill”, Passed by the Congress on 3 July, the change in D Minimis was scheduled to come into force on 1 July 2027, but recently an executive order extended the process by two years.
The new rule does not affect individual goods that take Americans with them from foreign travels worth $ 200 or less and do not affect gifts of $ 100 or less.
