Eric Menandage was denied parole after his bid for freedom before the parole board of California.
The younger one of the two notorious menndez brothers convicted in the 1989 shotgun killings of his rich parents in Beverly Hills filed his first petition before the Parole Board on Thursday morning.
His brother, Lyal, face his own parole suitability hearing on Friday. The two brothers were made eligible for parole release after being angry by a judge in May.
Eric Menandez can try for parole again in another hearing in three years, the board ruled.
His dialect for freedom is not over. The refusal is likely to focus on the village Gavin Newsom, which is reducing an apologetic request from different brothers.
Passive may come in less punishment or even an forgiveness, but it will not turn the brother’s faults. Weighing on such a high-profile and controversial case can be politically risky for Newsom, which is considered a possible contender for the President.
In addition to parole and pardon, the brothers have also asked a new test due to additional evidence being discovered in the case.
A judge is reducing the request, but it has been opposed by the Los Angeles District Attorney Office.
During the hearing, an prosecutor at the District Attorney’s office argued against Eric’s release, saying that positive changes in his behavior were inspired by only one chance of release. He argued that he “still had an improper risk to society” and “he is no insight into his crimes”.
Eric San Diego appeared virtually for hearing from Diego Jail, where he is wearing a blue jail jumpsuit and glasses. His family members, his lawyers and an prosecutor of the Los Angeles District Attorney Office also appeared on a video call with a parole board panel.
During almost a full day hearing, the panel asked him about killings, his relationship with his parents and his efforts to cover the crime in murders. He became emotional several times, describing those moments, he set his parents, Jose and Kitty Menandez on fire, with a gun, because he watched TV in his Beverly Hills Haveli.
The brothers shot the pair more than a dozen times, Eric loaded the gun again and continued on fire on his mother. He and his brother have long claimed self -defense and said that they are being sexually abused.
Eric said during the hearing before knowing his fate, “I just want to understand my family that I am very unthinkable for whatever I put him from August 20, 1989 to this day, and this hearing,” during the hearing, “Eric said that she knew her fate.
“If I ever get a chance for freedom, I want treatment about them,” he said. “Don’t think that this is my treatment – it is a family treatment. It is a family tragedy.”
The board questioned him about legal issues before his time and murder in jail, including two theft. He said that his time in jail helped him develop “moral railings”.
The panel also examined factors like his health and will he be threatened by the society if he is released from jail. A risk evaluation made for him found a “liberal” risk when he was released.
He reviewed schooling and positive programs, which he was involved in jail, as well as he was found several times in lockup, including prison quarrels, and contraband. Behind the bars, he got into trouble for a cell phone, art supply and tobacco – which he would be hidden inside a religious book.
A coalition of relatives, who has long advocated the release of brothers, and supporters had talked to the board even before the board, witnessing that Eric had changed during his long sentence.
Jose Menandez’s sister Teresita Menandez-Bralt had spoken in front of the panel, saying that he was forgiving Eric to kill his brother and he caused his family due to years of trauma.
She said that she is dying of stage for cancer.
“The truth is that I don’t know how much time I have left. If Eric is given parole, it would be a blessing,” he said to them. “I hope I live for a long time to welcome him to welcome him to my house, to sit on the same table, to wrap my arms around me – this will give me peace and happiness.”
The high-profile murder trials of the brothers were among those who defined the last century.
During his tests, the brothers claimed that the murders were committed in self-defense and said they would face emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.
The prosecutors, however, argued that they were greedy, deserved of demons, who had carefully planned murders, then lied to the authorities, who were investigating the case by spending $ 700,000 (£ 526,0000) – with a new push, jeep and buying purchase, including the property of their mother -father.
He was not arrested until a psychologist found a psychologist.
Three decades later, the case was re -examined in public for a mixture of new evidence, Tikok, Netflix’s drama series Monsters: The Lyl and Eric Menandage Story and a mixture of new evidence for celebrities.
But the agitation in the courts did not happen until the former top prosecutor of Los Angeles re -investigated the case and asked a judge to re -punish, who cite a developed approach to adolescent criminals of California and abuses the remaining people.
A change in the law of the state allows criminals who were under 26 years of age, sentencing as minors rather than adults during their crime. Lyl was 21 years old and Eric was 18 years old when he killed his parents.
Despite fighting against the new LA District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s attempt to displeasure, a judge in May reduced his sentence with the possibility of parole to 50 years.
Hochman accused Eric of continuing to show “drugs and anti -social symptoms” and his office fiercely argued in court against both Eric and Lyl’s release.
