A person has been arrested for his alleged role in a GST (Goods and Services Tax) Credit fraud in Thane district of Maharashtra. 47.32 crore, an official said on Thursday.
According to a release by the Thane Commission of Central GST, “The matter was detected using the internal developed intelligence and advanced data analysis equipment, which revealed that M/S KSM enterprises operated by Vivek Rajesh Maurya fraudulently claimed and passed on ITC without any goods or services.”
Under the GST system, ITC (input tax credit) is a mechanism that allows businesses to offset taxes they pay on their purchase against tax that they collect on the output, thus preventing dual taxation.
The CGST release stated that a “search” at Maurya’s residence caused a “growing” evidence such as bank passbooks, checkbooks, mobile phones and “documents related to many fraud firms”.
Maurya was arrested on August 19 and produced before a judicial magistrate, who sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.
Officials said that as the investigation continues, more names may be surfaces.
