An official statement said that the Assam government on Monday started displacing 41 families to remove encroachments from about 26 hectares of land inside Rangma Reserve One in Golaghat district.
The administration on August 2 completed the five-day first phase of a large-scale eviction drive at Rengma in Uriamghat along the Assam-Nagaland inter-state border at the Sarupathar sub-division and cleaned the land of about 9,000 bighas, which affects about 1,500 families, mostly from the Muslim community.
The statement said, “The second phase of the eviction drive in the Rengma Reserve One began today, which is focusing on the encroached areas in Haldibari.”
During the practice, the authority removed 41 houses, demolished 65 illegal structures and cleaned about 26 hectares of forest land from encroachments.
The operation performed by the Forest Department in close coordination with the Golaghat district administration and the Assam Police is part of the state government’s continuous effort to remove encroachments from the forests.
The administration claimed in the statement, “The action issued a fixed notice to the residents and each step was executed in compliance with the prevailing legal norms and environmental safety measures.”
The drive was monitored by senior officials, including Special Chief Secretary MK Yadav and Forest Department, CRPF, Assam Police and Senior Representatives of the District Administration.
The statement said, “During the earlier phase, there was extensive drives in both parts of Rengma and Doyang Reserve One, which successfully cleaned the land tracts with encroachments. Overall, over 1,400 hectares of protected forest land was rebuilt at that phase.”
The government launched a eviction campaign at the Nambor South Reserve Forest in Golaghat earlier this month and approved alleged encroachment from the forest land of about 1,000 bighas, displacing more than 350 families.
“This initiative is part of the Assam government’s continuous mission to restore the constant forest land of the Assam government, strengthen ecological security and protect the integrity of reserved forests across the state,” he said.
