BBC News in Alaska
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit the Friday’s summit in the US state of Alaska, as they are ready to negotiate the end of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Putin has been consistent on his desire to win the Ukrainian region, while Trump has not made any secret of his desire to act as a global peacekeepers.
But both men can also understand other opportunities, such as diplomatic rehabilitation on the world stage on behalf of Putin. It is difficult to estimate another for the purpose of Trump, as he has recently made vaccination statements about his Russian counterpart.

Putin eyes international recognition … and more
By Russia editor Steve Rosenburg
The first thing that Putin wants from this peak is something that he has already given.
And this is the belief.
The most powerful country in the world, recognition from America, that the Western efforts to separate the Kremlin leader have failed.
The fact is that this high-level meeting is taking place, it is a will, as is a joint press conference that Kremlin has announced. Kremlin may argue that Russia is back in the top table of global politics.
“To be very separate,” earlier this week dressed Tabloid Moscowski COMSOMOLILES.
Not only Putin has achieved the US-Russia Summit, but is a major place for it. Alaska has a lot to offer Kremlin.
safety first. At its nearest point, the mainland is just 90 km (55 mi) from Chukotka, Alaska, Russia. Vladimir Putin can reach there without flying on “hostile” nations.
Second, this is a long way – a very long way – from Ukraine and Europe. It sits well with Kremlin’s determination to sideline the leaders of the Kiv and the European Union, and directly deal with the US.
There is also historical symbolism. The fact that Zarist Russia sold Alaska to America in the 19th century, Moscow is being used to justify its efforts to change borders by force in the 21st century.
“Alaska is an obvious example that the state boundaries can change, and the larger areas can switch ownership,” Moscowski Komsomolates wrote.
But Putin wants more than international recognition and symbols.
He wants victory. He is emphasizing that Russia seized and captured and captured four Ukrainian regions (Donnetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhajia and Kheson) and withdrawn from parts of those areas under Ukrainian control.
This is unacceptable for Ukraine. “Ukrainians will not give their land occupiers,” called the President of the country, Volodimier Zelancesi.
Kremlin knows that. But if it protects Trump’s support for its regional demands, then the calculation may be that Trump will cut all support for Kiev as a result of rejection by Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia and America will meet with promoting relations and developing economic cooperation.
But there is another landscape.
Russia’s economy is under pressure. Budget shortage is increasing, income from oil and gas falls.
If economic problems are advancing Putin to end the war, the Kremlin may compromise.
For now, there is no indication of that – Russian officials insisted that Russia takes initiative on the battlefield.
Trump wants a chance to claim progress towards peace
By North American correspondent Anthony Zucher
Trump, during his 2024 presidential campaign, promised that the Ukraine war would be easy to end and he could do so in a few days.
This promise has been hung on the US President’s efforts to resolve the struggle, as he has alternated with Ukrainian and Russians since he returned to the White House in January.
He grabbed Zelansky at a dramatic White House meeting in February, and later temporarily suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with the war -torn nation.
In recent months, he has been more important about Putin’s intimacy and desire to attack civil goals, determining a series of deadlines for new sanctions on Russians and other countries that trade with them. Last Friday was the most recent deadline, and before that, with all the people, Trump eventually retreated.
He is now hosting the Russian President on American soil and is talking about “land-swapping”, which may include land concessions in exchange for peace due to fear of Ukraine.
Therefore, during his Friday conversation with Putin, any discussion about what Trump wants has been done with the state’s vaccination statements and actions.
This week, Trump has made a concrete effort to reduce expectations for this meeting – perhaps a silent acceptance of limited possibilities of success with only one party in war.
On Monday, he said that the summit would be a “feel-out” meeting. He suggested that he would know if he could reach a deal with the Russian leader “perhaps in the first two minutes”.
“I can leave and say good luck, and it will end,” he said. “I can say that this is not going to be decided.”
On Tuesday, the White House press secretary Karolin Levitt strengthened the message, called the summit a “hearing session”.
With Trump, it is often best to expect unexpected. And the Zelansky and European leaders on Wednesday spoke to him in an attempt to ensure that he does not make a deal with Putin who would not Ukraine – or cannot accept.
One thing has been practically clear throughout the year, however: Trump will welcome the opportunity to be the person who ends the war.
In his inaugural address, he said that he wanted his most proud legacy to be “Shantidoot”. It is no secret that he yearns for international recognition of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump is not a person trapped in the details. But if he has the opportunity to claim that he has progressed towards peace during talks in ankrage, he will take it.
Putin, always a lover conversation, can just find a way to let Trump do so – on the terms of Russia, of course.
