The US and Russia agreed to hold a meeting between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday 15 August, to discuss how to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump announced the meeting a week earlier – to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine as its time limit for Russia on the same day to face more US sanctions.
At the behest of Trump, a three -round conversation between Russia and Ukraine is yet to bring both sides closer to peace in this summer.
Here we know about the meeting between the two leaders, being in Alaska – which was once the Russian area – in ankrase.
Why are they meeting in Alaska?
The US bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, lending a historic resonance at the meeting. It became an American state in 1959.
Russian President’s assistant Yuri Ushkov said that both countries are neighbors, only Bering Strait is separating them.
“It seems quite logical for our delegation to fly on Bering Strait and to be held in Alaska for our delegation, such as an important and anticipated peak of the leaders of the two countries to be held in Alaska.”
The last time Alaska focused at an American diplomatic program when it was in March 2021, when Joe Biden’s newly constructed diplomat and national security team met their Chinese counterparts in Encourage.
Sit-down became sharp, the Chinese accused the Americans of “kripalu and hypocrisy”.
Where will Trump and Putin meet in Alaska?
The meeting will be held in the ankrage, the White House confirmed on Tuesday.
While announcing bilateral, Trump said that the location “will be very popular for many reasons”, without disclosure it will be in the largest city of the state.
The pair will be hosted in the largest military establishment joint base ElMendorf-Richardson in Alaska. The 64,000 -acre base is a major American site for Arctic military readiness.
Why Putin and Trump meet?
Trump is working hard to end war in Ukraine without much success.
As a presidential candidate, he pledged that he could end the war within 24 hours of assuming office. He has also argued that the war would have “never happened” when the President was President at the time of Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Last month, Trump told the BBC that he was “disappointed” by Putin.
Disappointment grew and Trump set the August 8 deadline for Putin to agree to the immediate ceasefire or to face more serious American sanctions.
As a hit of the deadline, Trump instead announced that he and Putin would meet personally on 15 August.
According to Trump, a “highly productive” talks with Putin were held in Moscow on Wednesday, according to Trump after the meeting US Special Envoy Steve Witchoff.
Next to the meeting, the White House demanded to play speculation that bilateral can achieve a ceasefire.
“This is a listening exercise for the President,” said Karolin Levitt, the press secretary of the White House. He said that Trump can travel to Russia after Alaska visit.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he saw the summit as a “feel-out meeting”, which aims to urge Putin to end the war.
Is Ukraine participating?
The Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelansky is not expected to participate. Trump said on Monday: “I would say that he can go, but he is in a lot of meetings.”
However, Trump said that Zelancesi would be the first person he would call later.
A White House official later stated that Trump and Zelanski would meet Putin on Wednesday ahead of the US President’s summit on Wednesday. Zelancesi’s meeting will be included by several European leaders.
Putin requested that Zelansky was excluded, although the White House earlier stated that Trump was ready to hold a tripartite in which all three leaders were present.
Zelansky has said that no agreement will be for “dead decision” without input from Ukraine.
What do both sides expect to get out of it?
While both Russia and Ukraine have long stated that they want the war to end, both countries want things that other strong opposition.
Trump said on Monday that he was going to try to get something [Russian-occupied] Regarding the region to Ukraine “. But he also warned that” some swapping, land changes “may have to happen.
However, Ukraine is adamant that it will not accept the Russian control of areas that Moscow have seized, including Crimea.
Zelancesi pushed back against any idea of “swapping” areas this week.
The Ukrainian President said, “We will not reward Russia.”
Meanwhile, Putin has not landed his regional demands, neutrality of Ukraine and the future size of his army.
Russia began his full -scale invasion of Ukraine, in part, on Putin’s belief, the Western defensive alliance, NATO, neighboring country was using the neighboring country to establish one leg to bring its troops close to the borders of Russia.
The Trump administration is trying to dominate European leaders on a ceasefire deal, which will hand over the Sweets of the Ukrainian region to Russia, BBC’s American partner CBS News has reported.
The agreement will allow Russia to control the Crimean Peninsula, and according to sources familiar with the talks, the Donbas region of the eastern Ukraine, which is composed of Donnetsk and Luhansk.
In 2014, Russia illegally captured Crimea and its army controls most of the Donbas region.
Under this deal, Russia will have to leave the Ukrainian regions Kherson and Zaporizhia, where it currently has some military control.
Talking to Fox News, US vice -president JD Vance said that any future deal was “no one was going to make anyone super happy”.
“You’ve found here to make peace … you can’t finger,” he said.
“The path of peace is to sit near a decisive leader and force people to come together.”
