Residents of Gaza City have told the BBC that they are living in fear after the Israeli government announced the plan to take the largest city in the region.
Abu Mohammed said, “We are peaceful citizens. Whatever is happening, we have nothing to do with it. Netanyahu knows.”
“All this pressure is not on us, not on Hamas. The leaders of the movement and their families are abroad. They are not among us.”

Many residents told the BBC that they were afraid of being displaced from their homes – or they were living in temporary shelters – if the plan proceeds.
Sabreen Mahmood said: “I will not leave my house. We will not live again through displacement. We left Gaza City for a whole year and ended harsh insults in Al-Mavasi. We will not make mistakes. Let them destroy the house on our heads-we will not leave.”
Abu Mustafa said that Israel has “changed the withdrawal in a game: ‘Leave here, now go there.”
Another resident, Um Ahmed Shalah said: “We will not empty, because when we did, we saw torture.
“We want to have mercy on us and stand with us in Arab countries, Trump, and all other countries, and feel for us. We can’t provide a kilo of flour for our children. We cannot take the risk of buying it.”
But some Palestinians also directed Hamas anger, he was a failure to negotiate at the end of the war.
Ihb al-Hello, a resident of Gaza city and influencing social media, wrote online: “I swear by God, Hamas leaders are living in a science fiction world. Have mercy on people. Who are you to decide to sacrifice us?”
Activist and resident Khalil Abu Shamla accused the group of “choosing suicide” and taking Gaza’s population with him, saying that Hamas was “linked to power on our bodies”.
Other residents said that they were indifferent to the new scheme, saying that the Israeli army had already controlled their lives.
A man said, “What are they threatening? Gaza is captured. We are in a cage, they are around the cage, and we are inside it.”
