Israel’s security cabinet has approved a plan to control Gaza City, in the controversial growth of its war in Gaza.
Hundreds of Palestinians live in the city north of the Gaza Strip. It was the most populous city in Enclave before the war.
Many world leaders have condemned the plan, and the United Nations has warned that this would “forcibly displace” and “more murders”. Hamas warned of “terrible resistance” for the move.
It also faces fierce opposition within Israel – which also includes military officers and hostage families.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier told Fox News that Israel planned to capture the entire Gaza Strip and eventually “handed over it to Arab forces”. A lot is still very vague, but here we know about the new plan.
What are the details of the plan?
A statement issued by the office of Israeli Prime Minister said that Israel Defense Force (IDF) “will be ready to control the city of Gaza”.
It was also underlined that these five “principles” to end the war were:
- Disarray of Hamas
- Return of all hostages, both alive and dead
- Demonetisation of gaza strip
- Israeli security control on Gaza Strip
- The establishment of an alternative civil administration which is neither Hamas nor Palestinian Authority.
The IDF said that the army would prepare to control Gaza City, providing humanitarian assistance to the “Civil population outside the Combat Zone”.
It is not clear that this is new aid, and if it will be given by controversial Israel and US-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation or any other mechanism.
Why is only Gaza city being taken?
Prior to the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that he wanted to control Israel everyone of Gaza.
In the new scheme, only Gaza City is mentioned.
Israel has stated that it currently controls 75% of Gaza, while the United Nations estimates that some 86% of the area is either under military regions or under the orders of withdrawal.
The objective of this scheme is to go to Israeli forces to take control of the largest city in the enclave for the first time during this conflict.
It is surrounded by land which is already under the control of IDF or subject to a clearance order.
Control over the city is likely to be the first phase of the entire scale of the Gaza Strip, our Middle East Correspondent Hugo is said to be left.
There have also been some speculation that the threat of complete occupation may be part of a strategy to pressurize Hamas to get concessions in the stalled ceasefire negotiations.
Netanyahu told Fox News that Israel “does not want to keep Gaza” and intends to hand over it to “Arab forces”.
“We want a security perimeter. We don’t want to control it,” he told the channel.
When will Israel take the city of Gaza?
Israel has not said when the acquisition will begin, but the report in Israel’s media suggests that the army will not immediately go to the city of Gaza – and the residents will need to leave first.
Israel said that it assumes that the “optional plan” presented to its cabinet would not get “Hamas’s defeat or return”.
However, it is not clear what the alternative plan was or who presented it. This was a more limited proposal of the Chief of Staff of the Army in the Israeli media report.
Netanyahu is being “deliberately unclear”, on which “Arab forces” believes that he can run Gaza, according to BBC’s main international correspondent Lise Docket, as he has been in the past with his plans for the region.
He must be referring to Jordan and Egyptians, who said that he is ready to work with Israel – but he has made it clear that he will not go to Gaza behind an Israeli occupation.
No more details have been shared for Gaza’s post-techover government regarding a time -line.
What is the reaction?
Netanyahu is facing Growing criticism from hostage families And from world leaders.
The IDF Chief of Staff is also reported to disagree with the scheme. For some time, Israel’s military leadership is saying that he is done in Gaza as Hamas is no longer threatened as an organized military force.
The UK Prime Minister Sir Kir Stmper called Israel’s growth “wrong” and it will only bring more bloodshed “.
Israel’s decision to expand military operations in Gaza is “declaration of war crime”, Mustafa Bargouti, president of Palestinian National Initiative.
Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Israeli aims to “forcibly displace Palestinians from its land”.
“War in war should now end” and warns that “the war should end” and go ahead, “says the United Nations Human Rights Head Volcar Turk” forcible displacement, more killing, more unbearable pain, insensitive pain, insensitive destruction and atrocities will be crimes “.
The Hostel Family Forum Headquarters said that the decision is “leading us to a huge destruction for both hostages and our soldiers”.
There have been some reports that Americans had given Netanyahu to move forward to capture the city of Gaza.
But it is worth noting that NBC News reported a furious phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Netanyahu in late July – the President said “fake news”.
