A prominent suspect in the murder of Special Sub Inspector (SSI) of Tamil Nadu was shot by the police on Thursday when he allegedly attacked a police officer in an attempt to escape, the officials informed the matter.
According to the police, a police team Nabgar to the deceased, M Manikandan from an isolated place near a private farm in Gudimangalam village in Tiruppur district, where he, his brother and his father attacked SSI Shanmugavel during an alcoholic dispute on August 5.
Officials said a special investigation team took the suspect near the Apparu Dam in Chikkanu near Gudimangalam, when he allegedly tried to escape, to recover the murder weapon.
A police officer said, “The suspect attacked (Deputy Inspector) C. Saravankumar with the same sickle, who used to kill SSI Shanmugavel and attempts to escape. We warned him, but he did not keep his weapon down and did not keep the police team to attack. Shanmugavel (57), on August 5 at around 11 am, on patrol duty, reached a private farm after receiving information about a fluffy dispute between the idol, his elder son Manikandan and his younger son Thangpandi -Gudimangmangalam, all residents of Mongozhuva near Tamilanlamangalam (West Zone).
After reaching the farm with Constable Azaguraja, SSI found that the idol was injured after a fight with his two sons. Trying to settle the dispute, the father and his two sons allegedly tried to attack the police, the IGP said, Manikandan attacked SSI badly with a sickle as the officials were trying to escape.
The ruling DMK’s ally Congress criticized additional judicial murder. “Fits, custodial deaths and torture are all unprofessional policing,” said Congress MP Karti Chidambaram. Another Congress MP Sasikant Senthil questioned, “The murder of an SSI in the line of duty is deeply saddened, and no word can actually console the family. But does it justify another cold blood murder by the state, even what has really happened?”
The IGP said that six special police teams were formed for trace and Nab Murthy, who and two criminal offenses were pending against their two sons: Manikandan and Thangpandi, who had four cases, were pending against them, the IGP said, against each, each.
All the workers in the field related to AIADMK MLA C Mahendran have already surrendered to the police on August 6.
