Questions around the accident
One of the questions that should be answered is whether the accident could be avoided.
John Nitkin, a Harbor pilot for Portmiomia, said that the accident occurred in unrestricted water, meaning that it was quite widespread that Bajra had several ways to maneuver around the small vessel.
He said, “I saw the barge. It was one of the crane barges that work, they build sewels and docks. Very little powerful. This step is very slowly and difficult to stop them,” he said.
Nichtin questioned whether the captain of the tugboat, who was pushing the barge, knew about the small vessel.
He said, “I don’t know what kind of visibility is from the wheelhouse (Tughbot captain). I estimate, usually very poor. So they usually have members of a crew, which is on the bow of the bow of the tug, so he can keep a look,” he said.
Coast Guard leads accident investigation
The Coast Guard has set up a 250-yard security area around it to keep other ships away. According to the Coast Guard, the vessel owners are responsible for hiring a commercial disposal company to make the vessels safely water and avoid any further problems or issues like oil spread. The commercial salve company will have to submit these schemes for the approval of the Coast Guard.
Captain Florio said, “Our hearts continue to mourn with the people affected by Monday’s tragic incident, especially with another children passed by another children,” Captain Florio said. “The Coast Guard is committed to a thorough investigation to highlight all the facts. We regularly seek expertise of our federal, state and local partner law enforcement agencies, and the matter is no different. Our investigative team will join the home nation of Argentina, the investigators of Argentina.”
