The father-son couple of the US Mains National Soccer Team have their own history. The last names may not be recognizable as Griffe, Bond, or Manning-but these couples have affected football in the US as the first World Cup was held.
So to honor Father’s Day, we are celebrating the great father and sons who are at the player and coach level during the history of the American Men’s program.
Greg and Sebstian Berelter
The latest father-son pair to join the list and only one with a USMNT player-turn-manager. Gregs were part of three World Cup squads – two as one player (2002, 2006) and one as the manager of the team in 2022. In a bay area connection, Sabstian’s first competitive cap came to San Jose on 15 June 2025 against Trinidad and Tobago in ConcacAF Gold Cup match. Greg’s competitive start on 1 February 1998 in the same tournament against Cuba in nearby Oklaland.
Bob and Michael Bradley
While Bob never played for USMNT, he left his mark as a coach in the 2010 World Cup. The squad consisted of Michael, who was a prominent player on the run of 16 in South Africa. Now following the managerial footsteps of his father, Michael was named coach at the MLS Reserve Side New York Red Bulls II last week. James Brown and George Brown
The first USMNT father-son duo has its own roots in the newborn days, including squads played in the World Cup for the first time in 1930. James, a native of Scotland, scored in the inaugural edition in Uruguay and later became one of the forearm of football in the United States. His son George had just one USMNT appearance (against Mexico in 1970), but was also an important person in developing the game. Brown is included in the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Philip and Joe Gayou
Gyaus is actually three generations of international players (Philip’s father Joseph ‘Nana’ Gayau played for Ghana in the 1960s). The dynasty allowed Philip to represent USMNT from 1989–91-He played and coached the US Beach Soccer Team for many years. Philip’s son, Joe, last played for USMNT in 2019 and also had stents in several German clubs including Borusia Dortmund.
Harry and Ty Caf
There is a football story of Kefs that revolves around both the World Cup and the Olympics. Harry was a member of the 1950 World Cup squad, harassing England, and then captained the USA Olympic teams in 1952 and 1956. In 1980, Tye felt the Olympic-bound, before the US boycotted the Moscow Games. He performed in total for the national team of American men.
Joe and Ellen Maca
Joe, a Belgian native, was also a part of the 1950 World Cup squad that surprised England. A fruitful career in the NASL made him the National Hall of Fame Indicity in 1976. Ellen made five demonstrations for the US Mains National Team between 1973–1975, which was before a career. He worked for KLM Airlines and was the chairman of one of the terminals at JFK Airport.
Claudio and Gio Reyana
Not only Gio Reyana and her father Claudio have a similarity, but their game career has also reflected each other. Like the Gio, Claudio started his club career in Germany, and they both play in Central Midfield, although Gio (6’1 “) has a four -inch advant on its pops (5’9”). Where Claudio has an advantage, it is the number of World Cup appearances. Claudio played in four World Cups with the United States before retiring after the 2006 edition. He has 112 caps for 32 of Gio, but Gio only requires two goals equal to his father’s total.
Tim and Taylor Twelman
Taylor may be more famous for Twelvens due to his successful international and club career, but Taylor’s Dad Tim also made the same appearance for the US Mains National Team in 1982. In fact, Tim’s father and his two uncles – Mike and Steve Twelman – played professionally. Taylor’s career has since taken him from the pitch to a broadcast booth.
