New Delhi: India has successfully tested its first hydrogen-operated train coach at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. It is postponed as the most powerful of its kind in the world.Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav posted a video of the trial on X on Friday, which was called a historic moment towards making “the future ready and sustainable India”. He said, “India is developing 1,200 HP hydrogen trains. It will place India among leaders in hydrogen -operated train technology.” In a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Vaishnav said that Indian Railways has envisaged running 35 hydrogen trains under ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’, which is Rs 70 crore per train at a cost of Rs 80 crore per train and ground at a cost of Rs 80 crore per train and ground infrastructure.The National Transporter has taken a state -of -the -art project to develop the country’s first hydrogen train based on the pilot by retrofit of hydrogen fuel cells on the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake. The minister informed the House that along with the train, concomitant on-ground infrastructure to recreate hydrogen is conceived with an integrated hydrogen production-system facility.
