According to a report, the prisoner has used VAPE to start a fire inside the jail.
According to the report, HMP Berwyn in Wrexham deliberately increased by 74.1% from 2023-24 to 2024-25, presented to the North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority on Monday.
A total of 63 “primary” fire was initiated in the jail in the last one year and 47 of them were attended by fire service.
According to the report, the incidents of category C men continued to increase incidents in jail and were mainly VAPE based, the battery was being used as an ignition source.
The report stated that Seva regularly assisted the Crown Inspector for HM jails and aided in an inspection program in May 2025.
The document said, “We are trying to address this situation and ignition source by looking at the options with the Crown Inspector and assisting them in our research in this problem.”
“The events are unlikely to reduce the short term,” it said.
The issue was raised in view of the new demands on the trends and service of “growing and fall”, which found that there was a significant increase in the number of all events.
In the last financial year, 6,485 incidents took place, the report states, which was “quite up” to an average of three years of 5,737.
The cost of a living crisis and the affiliated costs of heating houses saw some effects on accidental fire in houses, it is said, most commonly introduced by combustible objects with fire.
The report also found that the North Wales Fire Service was the only service in Wales, with an increase in events during the financial year, with an increase of 8.5%.
