New Delhi: Students suicides in 2022 in India in India 7.6% of cases of suicides, 8.0% in 2021 and 8.2% in 2020, according to the report of India (ADSI) published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in India (ADSI). But the dip provides little rest as the data outlines a intensive mental health crisis, in which states such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh alone contribute about one -third of these tragedies.Experts and MPs have warned that increasing academic pressure, career uncertainty, loneliness, violence, drug abuse and lack of family support are promoting this dangerous trend. Concerns in coaching hubs like Kota, Rajasthan are particularly intense, where extreme competition and fierce program have been linked to a part of student deaths. The issue recently revealed prominently in Parliament, the members demanded a commission to investigate the student suicides in Kota and Elite Institutions.The government on Monday admitted to the written reply to the Lok Sabha that despite educational reforms and mental health initiatives, “extreme academic pressure” continues to lead weak students. Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar said that multi-dimensional measures were being rolled out to address the crisis including psychological support for students, teachers and families.The major program of the Ministry of Education has reached millions of students through Manodarpan, Counseling Helpline and Live Interactive Sessions, while the District Mental Health Program (DMHP), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, includes 767 districts with suicide prevention services and life skills training in schools and colleges.Recognizing the role of intoxication as an emerging issue among the youth, the Center has intensified the mental health outreach as well as anti-drug operations. The UGC has issued advice to higher education institutions to prioritize physical fitness, sports, student welfare and emotional welfare. Institutions like IIT-Madras, IIT-DELHI, and IIT-Guwahati have started operating workshops on stress management and flexibility under the Malavia Mission Teachers Training Program.In January 2024, the government also issued guidelines to regulate private coaching institutes, asking states to ensure mental health assistance, abolish batch separation and closely monitor student welfare.
