New Delhi: A woman student in Odisha college chose to burn herself when her complaint against one of her teachers was unheard. The student, who had earlier filed a sexual harassment complaint against the head of his department and demanded disciplinary action after alleged self-immooling in the premises of the campus on Saturday.A male student who tried to save him was also injured, and both were rushed to the district headquarters hospital. PTI reported that the woman was later transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for special care. The incident occurred after he met Dilip Ghosh, principal of a college in Balasor. The victim, an integrated B.Ed student of a second year, had first protested a week’s protest in the campus demanding action against the accused teacher.Principal Dilip Ghosh said: “The student came to me and wanted to take action against the teacher. I stressed him.The accused teacher is currently detained at Sahadevkhunta police station in Balasore Town. SP Raj Prasad and a scientific team are investigating on a site.After going to the hospital, Balasore MLA Manas Dutta said: “The health status of a woman student is important. Our first priority is to save her life.”Fellow students said that the victim had been experiencing a serious psychological crisis for several days due to alleged harassment by the head of the department. He said that his crisis intensified because neither the college administration nor the police took action against the accused teacher. This incident has created unrest within the college campus.
